Bexley residents get say on £128m regeneration project
Bexley residents are to get their say on how a £128 million regeneration project in the area should unfold.
Design Council Cabe has set up a number of workshops with the public to see how the environment can be evolved, 24dash reports. It means anyone looking at property to rent in Bexley may end up contributing to such meetings.
Under the terms of the deal - which is being funded by the Homes and Community Agency - six high-rise blocks are to be replaced with 1,100 family homes with the potential to house around 2,000 people. The project is due to get underway in March 2013 and is expected to take five years to complete.
LB Bexley, Waites and architects BroadwayMalyan are all partners on what is one of the biggest schemes taking place in the city, while it is being co-ordinated by Orbit Homes.
Caroline Field, regeneration manager at Orbit Homes, said: "This is all about transforming this neighbourhood in partnership with local people so we were delighted when Design Council Cabe offered to get involved.
"Local people have been involved every step of the way and it's great to have this level of expertise to help them shape the physical environment of this new community where they will live."
Brian Quinn, an advisor from Design Council Cabe - which was started in 1944 as the Council of Industrial Design - noted seeking the views of the neighbourhood is vital when it comes to good design. He went on to note taking these opinions on board ensures developments are created that everyone can be proud of.
It is not the only improvement residents of Bexley can look forward to, as a new Education Change Programme has been agreed upon by the borough. It means children will receive the skills necessary to aid their long-term learning and development and ensure they are prepared for the working world. Director for education and social care Mark Charters said the area has ambitious targets when it comes to teaching.
