Bexley highlights progress on local Olympic planning
People occupying flats to rent in Bexley have been assured that the local council is making good progress in getting ready for the forthcoming 2012 Olympic Games in London.
The council is putting measures and contingencies in place to help ensure the various events planned for the summer go off without a hitch, thus guaranteeing a good time for those getting into the Olympic spirit, while also maintaining continuity for others who wish to carry on with business as usual.
On January 24th 2012, the authority joined up with other London boroughs to take part in an exercise to test their readiness to deal with major incidents during the games, which involved the establishment of a temporary emergency control centre for the area.
Intended to test command, control and coordination processes under the increased pressures associated with a huge event of this kind, the exercise saw Bexley Council staff dealing with more than 70 messages, requests and reports.
Meanwhile, preparations are also underway for July 22nd, when the Olympic torch relay will pass through the borough, coinciding with a free evening concert in Danson Park.
Once the council confirms the event route, an interactive map with full details will be published online for residents to consult.
Teresa O'Neill, leader of the London borough of Bexley, said: "We want to reassure residents and businesses that, together with a range of partners including the emergency services, we are doing all we can to prepare for the Games and the torch relay.
"We want to encourage residents to get involved and enjoy all the Olympics has to offer."
Last month, it was announced that Bexley's Rhyme Relay project - which sees local schoolchildren collaboratively creating a poem to celebrate London and the Olympics - has been awarded the Inspire Mark by the London 2012 Organising Committee.
