Whitechapel Market improvements set to begin
People who live in property to rent in Whitechapel may be pleased to hear that a project to make £1 million worth of improvements to the local market gets underway next week.
It is part of a drive to rejuvenate the main thoroughfare between Central London and the Olympic Park ahead of next year's Olympic Games and will ready the area for the expected increase in visitors.
Local councillors hope that it will also mean the region becomes more attractive for shoppers and creates a better environment in which businesses can thrive in the longer-term.
Planned works to Whitechapel Market include improvements to the roads and pavements and new lighting.
There will also be new bin storage areas, updated electricity provision and a water supply for stallholders.
According to the plans, disruption to market traders will be minimised, although the council warned that small sections of the market will be transferred to the other side of Whitechapel Road for short periods of time.
The works, which are part of the High Street 2012 programme of improvements across the capital, are scheduled to be completed by April next year.
Other projects included in High Street 2012 include the creation of a new park at Braham Street to replace a busy road system and the restoration of six historic buildings on Whitechapel High Street in Aldgate.
Meanwhile, a floating towpath designed by Adams and Sutherland, is to be built along the River Lea in Bow, with improved pedestrian crossing facilities at the roundabout and at Bow Church earmarked as future enhancements.
Commenting on the series of projects, Boris Johnson, Mayor of London, remarked: "It's fitting that there will be a wonderful, vibrant avenue leading to London's 2012 legacy in the east of the city."
