Tower Hamlets encourages mental wellbeing
Tower Hamlets Council is encouraging homeowners to be more conscious of their general health during Mental Health Awareness Week from May 11th to May 17th.
The campaign is delivered every year and led by the Mental Health Foundation. It aims to increase awareness, encourage positive mental health and wellbeing and try to help those suffering from mental health problems.
For 2015, the topic is mindfulness and integrative, mind-body based training that helps people monitor how they feel about their lives irrespective of whether good or bad. The proactive practice has been identified as a way of maintaining mental strength.
Luke Doherty, Breathing Space manager at the London Buddhist Centre, which offers specialised meditation sessions, said: “By developing mindfulness, you can learn how to break the link between negative thinking and the negative moods that this can lead to.
“It can be used in many ways, but can be particularly effective in preventing relapse into depression and addiction, as well as in managing stress and anxiety.”
Mindfulness has been recommended by many people as a proper treatment for individuals with mental issues, especially as the problems increase across the population. Currently, around one in four people across the UK will deal with a mental health problem annually.
The authority’s public health team in partnership with Compass Wellbeing, Mind in Newham and Tower Hamlets and local health trainers will be present at the London Muslim Centre from 12noon–2pm on Friday May 15th.
This day will be dedicated to promoting mental health services, encouraging discussion and answering questions on a topic that is misunderstood by many Britons.
Compass Wellbeing is one group that can provide a variety of therapies and workshops to assist people with handling stress and anxiety. Anyone who needs help with these issues are encouraged to contact them via their website.
