Thousands of new shops and homes to be built in Hammersmith and Fulham
A series of new developments are taking place across Hammersmith and Fulham, it has been revealed.
The council's planning committee has resolved to grant permission for a redevelopment of the area around Hammersmith Town Hall on King Street.
Over 196 homes will be constructed as a result, in addition to a cinema, shops, restaurants and cafes.
The £150 million overhaul is also set to include new offices for the council and a new town square.
According to an announcement by the council, its new office building is expected to save around £150,000 in energy costs.
The plans must also be approved by mayor of London, Boris Johnson. As part of the initiative, the ceremonial stone steps of the district's Grade II-listed town hall will be reconstructed to link up with the new public piazza.
Some £5.25 million will be spent regenerating the surrounding area.
In a statement, council leader Nicholas Botterill, said: "We listened to residents and ditched the less popular elements of the previous scheme and I now believe we have a scheme that Hammersmith can be proud of.
"It's been hard work but we finally have a plan that will kick start the much needed regeneration of the west end of King Street. The developers can now get on with the important work of breathing new life into this rather rundown area."
Further projects in the borough include plans to build thousands of properties, a university and a new public park, in addition to the shopping centre in West London.
Around 5,000 homes and 10,000 local jobs are anticipated from the plans.
The initiative will also include the former BBC studio, Television Centre and the expansion of Westfield London.
Commenting on the project, Mr Botterill, leader of Hammersmith and Fulham Council, said: "Together with existing policies, this planning framework has the potential to improve the prospects of thousands of local people by creating significant housing and job opportunities.
"Hammersmith and Fulham is a borough of opportunity, where the council works hard to ensure that residents have access to some of the best schools and jobs and are able to buy a home. We are determined to make the most of this once-in-a-generation chance to realise the potential of White City."
