Thames Gateway plans unveiled
Shrewd accommodation seekers with an eye for a bargain could soon be looking to rent in the Thames Gateway, as government plans for regenerating the area took shape this week.
Detailed plans of how the £9 billion designated to the project would be spent were unveiled for the first time, with new transport schemes and affordable homes a key element of the project.
The Thames Gateway represents a vast area stretching eastwards into Kent from Tower Bridge and Westferry on both banks of the Thames – with the recent green light for the Crossrail project adding to the excitement of regeneration work in the area
Housing minister, Yvette Cooper, said: "Since last year the government has secured funding for major projects that are transforming the gateway.
"The new deal on Crossrail, a new high speed line to London, Paris and Brussels, and London gateway, the biggest deepwater port in Europe."
The government claimed that the Thames Gateway regeneration plans would bring as many as 225,000 extra jobs to the area by 2016, making it a new potentially vibrant hub within easy reach of Central London.
