Thames Gateway 'ideal spot' for airport
It has been suggested that the Thames Gateway - western Europe's largest regeneration project - should consider incorporating plans for an airport into its design.
Writing in the industry magazine Building, Nick Raynsford MP, chairman of the Construction Industry Council and a former construction minister, said that the predominantly-brownfield site in East London provides an ideal alternative to Heathrow.
He said that concern is growing about the impact that a proposed third runway at Heathrow would have on local residents, with new flight-paths set to span over vast swathes of West London.
By comparison, Mr Raynsford argued, the Thames Estuary remains relatively free of densely-packed residential areas and has the added bonus of offering incoming jets an approach over water - something experts say affords added safety benefits.
"Not only would this really boost the eastern end of the Thames Gateway development, it would also facilitate links to Europe by air and rail," he commented, before adding: "On noise pollution, the choice is a no-brainer."
An estimated 65 million people currently travel through Heathrow each year.
