Tenants 'should check homes are fire-safe'
Almost half of UK households do not have a smoke alarm installed in their property, new research has revealed.
According to Halifax Home Insurance, 46 per cent of Britons have not fitted such a device, which could leave them at a risk of not being alerted in the event of a blaze.
Furthermore, of the people who do have an alarm fitted, only 16 per cent regularly test that the device is working, while belongings are also at risk, as 17 per cent of households do not have home contents insurance in place.
With this in mind, people looking for property to rent in Eltham or another part of London may wish to make sure their belongings are financially protected and that their landlord has taken the correct precautions to ensure they will be safe in the event of a fire.
Another issue that Britons may wish to bring up with their landlords is that of gas safety.
UK landlords are legally required to present their tenants with a certificate stating that all of the property's gas appliances are in a safe working order.
