Tenancy Deposit Scheme questioned
The Residential Landlords Association (RLA) has called into question the provisions of the Tenancy Deposit Scheme (TDS), sounding a note of concern with the scheme despite several positive responses.
RLA concerns about the scheme came alongside complaints about housing allowance payments and other issues for landlords, with overall criticisms of government inflexibility emerging.
Responses from other quarters to the TDS have been much more positive, with a recent bulletin to members after the first six months of its existence labelling it a success.
The TDS is one of several schemes authorised by the government, and acts to safeguard about £283 million of deposits from tenants – with 217,134 landlords claimed to have joined the uptake.
Despite the RLA's concerns to discuss the scheme further, it has become an important independent means of resolving landlord-tenant disputes, with parent organisation the Dispute Service claiming to receive an average of 800 calls per week.
RLA central qualms were with proposed changes to housing benefit claimant tenancy agreements, with the organisation claiming that those on benefits represented a significant part of the rental sector, but expressing reluctance to work with government programmes.
