Support for new document may help those in flats to rent in London
A new document produced by the Residential Landlords Association (RLA) could benefit people in flats to rent in London.
The RLA announced it has teamed up with specialist barristers and solicitors to develop a user-friendly tenancy agreement that can be downloaded from its website.
It contains a detailed inventory of all a property's furnishing and contents, in addition to the terms for the return of deposits, meaning it could reduce the number of disputes over charges taken from an occupier's down payment at the end of the lease.
Alan Ward, chairman of the association, said landlords who offer no agreement to tenants are being disrespectful and depriving them of their expected right to be treated fairly.
"A clearly defined contract takes away the kind of ambiguity that leaves judges free to decide who they are going to believe if disputes go to court," he added.
Last month, a study carried out by the Association of Residential Letting Agents found there had been an increase in the number of landlords in the third quarter of the year due to property owners being unable to sell their homes.
