St George's Leisure Centre gets £800k overhaul
St George's Leisure Centre in Shadwell has been refurbished thanks to a £800,000 investment from Tower Hamlets Council.
The project was completed with the help of the local authority's leisure partner Better and it means the much-loved site will be given a new lease of life. The decision to revamp the space was taken after a structural survey discovered the swimming pool was in dire need of updating.
Anyone looking at property to rent in Tower Hamlets may be buoyed by the announcement, as it means they will have some top-class services to use. A number of improvements have been made, including new windows, an updated pool plant system, major interior and exterior repair works and the reception area has also been enhanced.
Mayor of Tower Hamlets Lutfur Rahman said: "We have listened to the views of residents and pool users and decided to invest in this important community facility. I want to give residents more options to develop healthy lifestyles and enjoy their free time. That is why I am investing in St George's Leisure Centre."
Cllr Rania Khan, lead member for culture at the council, added the "fantastic investment ... will benefit residents by giving them a much improved swimming pool". People can also take advantage of a new dance studio, while the politician observed the project boosts the borough's overall leisure provision.
The centre is also going to offer local residents a new diving programme after it consulted with the Amateur Swimming Association on the issue. At the heart of the project is promoting a healthy lifestyle and so gymnastics and group exercise classes are to be arranged.
It comes after the council also held a conference to showcase to the community the wildlife on its doorstep, as over 100 people learned about local biodiversity issues. It is part of the Biodiversity Action Plan, which looks to protect, conserve and improve the environment.
Councillor Shahed Ali, cabinet member for the environment, remarked individuals need to do their bit to protect the green areas for themselves and future generations.
