Regeneration project set to change the face of Lewisham
A number of new roadworks and improvements are set to change the face of Lewisham, it has been revealed.
The roadworks are part of the first phase of the regeneration scheme, which will see the Loampit Vale roundabout in the area's town centre reconfigured as part of the Lewisham Gateway project.
The project will also see the construction of new homes in the area, as well as retail and business spaces.
Over £230 million will be spent on the scheme that will improve the connectivity between the Docklands Light Railway (DLR), the train station, and many nearby residential communities.
As part of the project, the new development will reconnect these areas with Lewisham’s town centre. In addition, green spaces will also be introduced, including Confluence Place, which has been designed by PRP architects.
The creation of Confluence Place will involve opening up the rivers Quaggy and Ravensbourne.
Commenting on the works, Michael Auger, director of Lewisham Gateway Developments, said the work will represent a refreshing new era for the borough.
He added: "The start of works on the road reconfiguration is an important milestone in the delivery of Lewisham Gateway and will greatly improve access to the town centre from Lewisham’s stations.
"These vital road works will enable the delivery of a new heart for the town centre comprising homes, shops, restaurants and green space. We are very grateful for people’s patience during the works and will seek to ensure disruption is kept to an absolute minimum."
A public consultation is currently being held to finalise some of the detailed designs for the project's second phase, which will see new cafés and restaurants being built.
In addition, pedestrian walkways will also be created.
