People considering flats to rent in London may want to choose landlords carefully
Individuals looking for flats to rent in London may be advised to go through a reputable landlord when searching for a property.
Recent graduate Harry Harris explained how he and five friends ended up £1,600 out of pocket after falling victim to an online rental scam.
Mr Harris stated two of the group went to view a house in Great Portland Street and were convinced the people there to meet them were legitimate landlords.
"The man seemed plausible and the place seemed fantastic. Then we all met a woman who said she was the Estate Agent," he stated.
However, after parting with a deposit and a month's rent in cash, Mr Harris and his friends became aware they had been conned after they arrived at the building and discovered the keys didn't work.
Last month, director of Easyroommate.co.uk Jonathan Moore said his company's fraud monitoring team had recorded an increase in the number of bogus adverts being placed for rental properties over the last three years.
