New public area planned for Borough Market
London's Borough Market is set to get an extension, which could provide a boost to the property market in the area.
Plans for the facelift include a number of new shops and a public area. They have been submitted by Borough-based architects Greig and Stephenson, which plans to create an office, retail and residential area opposite the market.
It is thought that the new facilities would be accessed via a pedestrian route and would reduce congestion in the area, increasing its appeal for people looking to rent property.
"A key issue at present is freeing up more space so the large weekend crowds can be more dispersed," Ken Greig, director at Greig and Stephenson, told Property Week.
A number of under-used buildings are also expected to get a facelift when they are turned into bars and restaurants.
The Hop Exchange is expected to become a glass-roofed atrium including restaurants, bars and retail units.
Borough Market is London's oldest food market and has been on the present site for 250 years.
