More Britons 'looking for tenants'
The number of households considering renting out a room rose by 27 per cent during the first two weeks of 2010, new research has found.
A report by Spareroom.co.uk has revealed that for 65 per cent of respondents, the motivation behind this was that Christmas had left them feeling they were stretched financially.
Indeed, the number of advertisements being posted on the group's website is already higher than at any point last month.
Matt Hutchinson, director of Spareroom.co.uk, said: "It seems that Christmas has acted as a tipping point for many homeowners whose finances have been stretched to the limit by the impact of the recession."
He added many homeowners are now using the start of the year to get their finances into order, leading them to consider new ways to boost their income.
However, Britons looking to move to London may find flats to rent in Hammersmith or elsewhere in the capital are more convenient than renting out a room in a private home.
This is because living in a flat could afford people with more space and privacy than they are likely to get sharing with a family.
