Merton Dog Watch hits membership milestone
Pet lovers living in property to rent in Merton may be interested to hear that a neighbourhood watch scheme for dog walkers in the borough has attracted 500 members in its first four months.
Led by Merton Police in partnership with the council and Merton Priory Homes, Dog Watch allows pooch owners to get involved with the community and share information that contributes to making the area cleaner and safer.
To celebrate reaching the milestone, 500th member Claire Petherwick and her 18-month old black Labrador cross Honey were given a goody bag from local pet care company Doggy Boutique.
She said: "I joined Dog Watch as I have often been out with Honey and seen things that need reporting but haven't been sure how. Dog Watch makes that very simple and I really like the idea that just by going for our walk as we do anyway each day, Honey and I are doing our bit for our borough and fellow residents."
Councillor Edith Macauley, cabinet member for community safety, engagement and equalities, said the scheme was proving extremely useful in keeping the streets of Merton clean and safe.
Merton residents are currently being called upon by the local council to volunteer as an Older People's Champion.
