Mayor launches green homes advisory service
A new energy saving programme tailored for London residents could see renters and homebuyers bombarded with tips on cutting carbon emissions and home energy use.
The London Green Homes service has been launched as an advisory service unique to the capital, with telephone, website and other resources promising tailored carbon cutting solutions for Londoners.
As an element of London mayor Ken Livingstone's Climate Change Action Plan, the strategy will take special account of the fact that 60 per cent of London's housing was built pre-1945, compared to 40 per cent nationally – making green revamps in the capital even more of a priority.
Mr Livingstone said: "In London, energy use in the homes is the single biggest source of greenhouse gas emissions. But much of the energy we pay for in our homes is simply wasted.
"There are simple changes we can make to cut energy use without any reduction in our quality of life – indeed the average household will save £300 if they carry out the Green Homes programme."
In addition to the Green Homes scheme, the mayor of London is also engaging with landlord groups and businesses in the capital in order to enforce new environmental imperatives, in the hope that by 2025 carbon emissions can be cut by 60 per cent.
