London council tax increase 'below inflation rate'
Council tax for those living in the capital will be held below the rate of inflation, mayor Ken Livingstone is set to announce.
In his budget speech today, Mr Livingstone will reveal that the increase in council tax will be less than two per cent and mean an 11p rise for those living in Band D properties.
Speaking before the announcement, he said that all of the money collected from the increase will be put towards making the capital's streets safer and greener.
"I have been able to hold the precept increase below the rate of inflation while still funding an additional 1,000 police officers in the coming year," he said.
During his budget speech, the mayor will also highlight that £100 million will be put towards environmental schemes in the capital.
This week has seen Mr Livingstone announce a number of green initiatives aimed at making the capital a more pleasant place to live.
These include the introduction of the Low Emission Zone, plans to introduce a bike hire scheme in the centre of town and yesterday's announcement that gas guzzling cars will soon be subject to a £25 congestion charge.
