Lewisham beats GCSE national average decline
Teenagers throughout Lewisham are celebrating the best GCSE results the borough has ever seen. The average results achieved by GCSE students, have topped the great results gained within the borough in 2012 and have set the bar even higher for future classes.
The number of students achieving five grades between A* and C within Lewisham increased by two percentage points on last year's results to 58 per cent this year. Of the five GCSEs that this number of students achieved, English and maths were two of them in every case. These subjects are highly desired by universities and jobs alike, meaning that a high number of students will be able to go on to the higher education, apprenticeships or jobs they want.
The number of students achieving grades between A* and C in English Maths alone, also saw an increase. This shows that whilst the national average of high grades achieved is in decline for another year, schools throughout Lewisham are continuing to perform well.
A rise in the number of students achieving the English Baccalaureate was also seen throughout Lewisham. This is where students achieve grades between A* and C in English, maths, science history or geography and a foreign language. The borough saw a five per cent rise in the number of students managing this achievements.
Addey and Stanhope School has achieved its highest number of students receiving top grades this year. Some 71 per cent of the schools GCSE pupils achieved grades between A* and C - including within maths and English exams.
Ann Potter, headteacher at Addey and Stanhope School, said: “We are delighted with these fantastic results which have been achieved by working in partnership with students, staff and parents, and truly reflect the ethos of Addey and Stanhope as a family school. These results bode very well for our sixth form which launches in September.”
The positive results show that whilst the national average is still declining, London schools are continuing to offer top class education, allowing students to thrive.
