International competition to design 'New Aldgate' for 2012
A new competition has been unveiled to encourage architects from all over the world to design a New Aldgate landmark which will stand for the duration of Olympic year.
The Architecture Foundation is looking for a temporary landmark which will open in January 2012 and is encouraging designers, artists, architects and specialists in other areas to submit ideas for an "inspiring and innovative yet realistic" structure.
Entries can be submitted until 12:00 BST on May 28th and it is hoped the winning design, which marks the 250th anniversary of the destruction of the original city gates, will be a welcoming signal to neighbouring residents and visitors.
Organisers are looking for the winning structure to "celebrate openness, diversity and the City's role as an international trading centre".
This follows the recent announcement of the $28.8 million (£18.75 million) ArcelorMittal Tower, the 377 ft sculpture which will sit next to the new Olympic Stadium in Stratford.
News of a new landmark set for the eastern edge of the Square Mile may be of interest to people looking for property to rent in London.
