Imperial College London's expansion plans accepted
Imperial College London's proposals to regenerate part of Hammersmith and Fulham have been accepted.
Planning permission was granted by Hammersmith & Fulham Council for the proposal, which will transform White City. It means anyone considering property to rent in Shepherds Bush can look forward to a range of new facilities being introduced to the area.
The development of Imperial West will bring health and fitness amenities, cafes, restaurants and retail stores to the local area. As well as this, a sense of community is to be created thanks to a new hub and accessible open spaces.
A seven-acre site on Wood Lane has been identified and it will become the technology campus for the university.
John Anderson, Imperial West project director, said: "This decision is good news for White City, for Hammersmith and Fulham and for London and will provide Imperial College with new postgraduate teaching and research facilities which will ensure it remains one of the world's leading academic institutions."
"The re-development will improve the urban environment, visual appearance and access to a site which had been closed to the public for many decades."
There will be green benefits to the development, as combined heat and power energy centre is to be built. It will also come with recycling facilities, green roofs and landscaping, making the site as sustainable as possible.
Access to the area is to be opened up north, south, east and west, while plans also exist for it to be connected to the Royal Borough of Kensington and Chelsea.
Hammersmith and Fulham is already blessed with some of the best parks and open spaces in London, as nine such locations have been honoured with Green Flag Awards by Keep Britain Tidy.
For Ravenscourt Park, Frank Banfield Park and Margravine Cemetery, it is the fourth year in a row they have been recognised. Councillor Greg Smith, deputy leader and cabinet member for residents' services, noted the top quality parks on offer in the borough are great for residents.
