Haringey launches initiative to boost energy efficiency for residents

Haringey launches initiative to boost energy efficiency for residentsHaringey Council has spearheaded a new initiative designed to cut energy bills for its residents, it has been revealed.

More than 300 people have already registered for the scheme, which offers grants of up to £6,000.

Under the Smart Homes Project, homeowners in six North London boroughs will get access to upgrades that can help to significantly boost the sustainability of their properties.

This will also include subsidised energy assessments and technical support. Improvements will include things such as solid wall insulation and bringing Victorian and Edwardian terraces up-to-date with the latest environmental upgrades.

These types of properties are traditionally difficult to insulate in a cost-effective way, due to the design of the buildings, so homeowners in the borough who are living in them will now be able to benefit from extra assistance.

The year-long scheme will be the first of its kind in the UK, and aims to make it simpler and more affordable for residents to install insulation that will help to reduce their energy costs.

Commenting on the initiative, councillor Joe Goldberg, cabinet member for economic development, social inclusion and sustainability, said: "I’m pleased that so many people have already taken advantage of this opportunity to make their homes more sustainable for the future.

“Our commitment to promoting pioneering green measures like this helps residents facing a rising cost of living, creates new long-term employment and supports our ambitions to cut carbon emissions.”

The project was first launched in July, and recently, the council announced that hundreds of residents have been in touch with energy experts Instagroup and energy firm, E.ON.

Figures published by Haringey Council showed that 35 per cent of heat is lost through external walls. This means that insulation may be one of the most effective ways to cut energy waste and trap heat.
