Hammersmith housing project announced
People residing in the London borough of Hammersmith and Fulham could soon be seeing a lot of new faces around their local area, with the council having just approved one of the most ambitious housing projects in history for the district.
As well as giving residents some new neighbours, they can expect a boost to the local economy and a plethora of jobs and apprenticeships up for grabs during the construction period.
Hammersmith and Fulham council will team up with a private contractor, which will be bound to build around 200 properties on two residential sites - Watermeadow Court Estate and Edith Summerskill House - overseen by the local authority.
A bidding process that has been set up to decide on which private company will be offered the work is already in full flow, with five firms whittled down to three at the final stage of procurement.
An as yet undecided proportion of the homes will be sold at a discounted rate in order to help young people and those on a low income take their first steps in the housing market.
Councillor Nicholas Botterill, leader of Hammersmith and Fulham council, said that the new properties would be extremely welcome at a time when low cost homes in the area are "like gold dust".
"London is in the midst of its greatest housing crisis for half a century, with house prices doubling in the last ten years," he said.
Mr Botterill added that he envisages a borough in which "decent, hard-working local residents can fulfil their housing dreams and purchase a property for a reasonable price".
It is hoped that, by working with a private investor, the council will be able to maintain a high level of control over the two sites, which will be strictly operated in the best interest of the taxpayer.
To this end, the local authority has stipulated that it will receive a proportion of the proceeds, to be ploughed back into similar projects and towards reducing £200 million worth of housing debt.
