Hammersmith & Fulham regeneration scheme gets underway

Hammersmith & Fulham regeneration scheme gets underwayA new 24,000-home regeneration scheme is underway in Hammersmith & Fulham, according to new findings.

Boris Johnson has outlined plans to create a mayoral development corporation to oversee the regeneration of the 950 hectares of industrial land at Old Oak Common and Park Royal in the borough.

By 2026, High Speed 2 and Crossrail stations are expected to be built at Old Oak. The entire initiative could fetch up to £6.2 billion for the London economy.

In addition, Old Oak Common could supply up to 2.5 per cent of the Greater London housing requirement up to 2031.

Commenting on the scheme, Mr Johnson said local authorities are currently consulting on the scheme.

He added: "The arrival of Crossrail and HS2 provides a once-in-a-lifetime chance to transform Old Oak Common and Park Royal into a brand new neighbourhood for West London. It is crucial that we get the views of local people so that we can reap the full benefits of this opportunity for local people and London as a whole."

North End Road in the borough is also set to be regenerated, along with Bloemfontein Road in Shepherd’s Bush.

Hammersmith and Fulham Council's policy and accountability committee (PAC) for economic regeneration, housing and the arts said that those two roads were one of the main areas they would be prioritising and improving upon.

Ben Coleman, chairman of PAC, said: "We want to change things for the better with residents, not make decisions behind closed doors. At our first PAC meeting, residents said that breathing new life into the high street really mattered to them.

"Residents tell us they want fewer betting and loan outlets and more shops. We will explore innovative things being done across the country and bring together shop owners, stallholders, landlords and residents to get ideas off the ground."
