Hammersmith and Fulham to get a £20m boost
Over £20 million will be spent on regenerating the Hammersmith and Fulham area after a new agreement was drawn up, it has been revealed.
The initiative is part of a joint collaboration between the borough council and Westfield London, which is set to bring significant benefits to residents in the area.
At least 162 affordable homes will be built as part of the scheme, although this could increase to 250.
In addition, £12.25 million will be spent on supporting infrastructure and developing the White City Opportunity Area within the borough.
Part of the money will go towards improving education, skills and the public realm. A further £600,000 will be used to support local jobs and training including the provision of an enhanced Work Zone.
The initiative also includes plans to invest £7 million to support transport improvements including rail infrastructure, increased bus capacity and upgrades to the roads.
Speaking about the developments, Councillor Stephen Cowan, leader of H&F Council, said: “We are very pleased to announce that on September 5th, H&F Council issued the planning permission for Westfield London’s expansion, to allow the development to get underway.
“This is a great example of public-private partnerships working effectively to deliver beneficial regeneration.”
Around 8,000 new jobs will be created as part of the scheme, with new restaurants, cafes, leisure facilities, offices, community space and shops, including the first John Lewis in West London.
Additionally, openly accessible amenity spaces and public areas are set to be developed and will bring together adjoining development sites.
Duncan Bower, Westfield’s director of development, added: “Westfield London has always aimed to be a positive force for change in the local area - whether that is through our direct financial contributions or physical delivery for community benefit, the significant job opportunities the centre provides annually, or the further inward investment that is attracted to the White City Opportunity Area."
