'Get covered' this Christmas
November, December and January is typically a time for an increase in the number of break-ins it has been revealed, which may mean that purchasing home contents insurance is a wise move this Christmas.
According to M&S Money, 36 per cent of households leave their festive gifts under the Christmas tree ahead of the big day, which could see them being an easy target for burglars.
This may particularly be the case as the darkest months of the year typically see a rise in burglaries.
Despite this, only seven per cent of people put security first and leave it until Christmas Day to place presents under the tree.
David Wells, M&S head of insurance, said: "At Christmas it's easy to get caught up in the excitement of the season and forget about home security. However, we all know there are criminals who see this time of the year as providing them with rich pickings."
Britons looking for flats to rent in Eltham or another part of London this Christmas may wish to prioritise purchasing contents insurance as soon as they move in, while also asking their landlord about what level of buildings insurance they have.
