Fulham Palace Road to benefit from improvements
Hammersmith and Fulham Council has agreed a deal to invest £1.76 million on improvements to Fulham Palace Road to make the area safer and more attractive for residents and visitors.
Between January and May 2013 money will be spent installing CCTV cameras along the road and resurfacing carriageways, with side streets from Talgarth Road to Putney Bridge set t benefit too.
Upgrades will be made to pedestrian crossings at the New Kings Road junction and short-stay one-hour car parking bays will be created between Childerley Street and Gowan Avenue.
In addition, the junctions with Fulham Road, New Kings Road and Fulham High Street will be amended to provide extra capacity for traffic and the road from Putney Bridge Approach to the New Kings Road junction will be reduced from three narrow lanes to two wider ones.
Other improvements include the removal of unnecessary street furniture and signage and the installation of energy efficient street lights to replace the existing yellow lanterns.
Around £750,000 will be provided by property developer St George, while Transport for London will contribute the remainder.
It is hoped that the improvements will help to improve traffic flow along Fulham Palace Road, make the area safer for pedestrians and reduce levels of crime.
The work will not only be welcomed by local residents, but it could also make property to rent in Hammersmith and Fulham more attractive to potential tenants.
"This work is vital in helping to get traffic moving on Fulham Palace Road, one of our main north-south routes, and unclog some of our most congested roads," said Victoria Brocklebank-Fowler, cabinet member for transport and technical services at Hammersmith and Fulham Council.
"We have worked hard to strike a balance for all road users, pedestrians and businesses with this scheme, and have identified significant improvements in every area along these roads.
"The works have already begun in some places and we will continue to work meticulously but as quickly as possible to minimise disruption but also so that everyone can feel the benefit of these enhancements soon."
