Earls Court: Grown out of its backpacking phase
Earls Court has received a bit of an upmarket facelift in recent years, changing from the domain of the backpacker into an altogether tidier area. It is now one of London's up and coming places to live and visit, drawing a large number of people in with its range of attractions, some good restaurants and shops.
Whilst in more recent history Earls Court has provided a large number of temporary homes and hostels for those travelling to London, it is fast becoming a popular place to live for young professionals who are able to find affordable housing in the area. Earls Court has undergone a few restorations and re-invention processes throughout the past few years, which is down to the area being marked as an Opportunity Area in the Mayor's London Plan.
The move to perform work on the Earls Court area is to make it a more integrated part of the city as a whole and incorporates all the parts of London that people like best. Improvements to Earls Court are continuing, yet the area still remains one of the more affordable parts of London in terms of living costs.
Places to go and things to see
Earls Court is arguably most famous for the exhibition centre. The centre provides a huge range of things to see, suiting a varied audience. The centre was opened in 1937 and has been attributed as being a large part of the country's cultural development as well as the increase in Britain's trading.
Earls Court hosts hundreds of events every year, the majority of which are incredibly high profile. Events range from baby shows to wine events to car shows, with a vast array in-between. Earls Court also hosts many musical names as well as award shows, meaning it truly does provide something for everyone.
The area has a selection of good pubs and a few good restaurants, offering a sense of small town living in the heart of London. Whilst there is not much else in terms of big shopping experiences and clubs, it is only a short walk, Tube journey or bus ride into the city and areas that have everything you need.
A walk of about 15 minutes will get you to Kensington High Street, which has almost every shop you could think of. The joy of not living or staying in an area with a bustling high street and a large nightlife is that it is a much quieter area overall. The lack of attractions of this sort should not be viewed as a negative as transport links enable visitors or residents to access all amenities found in the city in no time at all.
Housing
The houses in the Earls Court area are quite beautiful as there is a range of four or five storey terraced flats available at reasonable prices. Earls Court is in Zone One and as such it does mirror some of the Zone One prices, but being removed from the city itself somewhat it is more affordable.
The fact that the area is slightly quieter than other Central London locations makes it the ideal place for young families who don't want to live right in the hustle and bustle of the city, but still want to enjoy all the benefits and amenities it has to offer.
Young professionals are also likely to find a home at Earls Court, which has stepped away from its shabby history of backpackers and has received a number of updates. The area is continuing in its gentrification, and is likely to receive further updates throughout the ongoing work being done to London as a whole.
