DLR extension opens ahead of schedule
An extension of the Docklands Light Railway (DLR) has been opened in the London borough of Greenwich.
Mayor Boris Johnson announced that the Woolwich Arsenal station will play a key role in the transport plans for the 2012 Olympics, adding that the connection will help encourage the creation of new jobs.
"I am absolutely delighted that this extension of the DLR, with its cracking new station, is up and running and puts Woolwich Arsenal firmly on the Tube map," he said.
The extension links the new facility with King George V station and has opened seven weeks earlier than expected.
Funding for the £180 million project came from Transport for London's investment programme and transport commissioner Peter Hendy noted that a 50 per cent increase in the DLR's capacity is now being targeted for 2010.
A proposal for a new Crossrail station in Canary Wharf was recently approved, with plans to incorporate both the DLR and the London Underground.
