Council pledges to help Chelsea FC redevelop Stamford Bridge
Hammersmith and Fulham Council is willing to work alongside Chelsea Football Club in order to help them redevelop Stamford Bridge.
That is according to the leader of the local authority councillor Nicholas Botterill, who has insisted the body is determined to help the newly-crowned Champions League winners expand their current stadium.
Chelsea - who are owned by Russian oil magnate Roman Abramovich - have been searching for a location in the capital to build a new ground for some time as they perceive the 42,000-capacity Stamford Bridge as too small.
In order to maximise the club's revenues ahead of the implementation of Uefa's incoming Financial Fair Play regulations, the Blues had planned to construct a brand new stadium with an increased capacity of 60,000.
However, their bid to move into the land at the Battersea Power Station was rejected last week after being bettered by a joint offer from two Malaysian companies, meaning their search for a suitable plot within a reasonable distance from their current home has proven fruitless so far.
And, with this in mind, Cllr Botterill has reiterated his desire for Chelsea to stay at Stamford Bridge and has already contacted the club's board to express this wish.
"It now looks highly unlikely that Chelsea will be moving away from their historic home," he stated.
"The council remains committed to working with the club to explore all possible avenues for keeping the Blues here at their original home."
Cllr Botterill went on to insist that the "door is open" for discussions between the club and the council to talk about how Stamford Bridge can be "appropriately upgraded" so it befits "one of Europe's leading football clubs".
This echoes comments made by the leader in March, when he insisted the authority is completely behind any plans to redevelop the stadium as long as this is done sensibly and without negatively affecting local residents.
