Community heroes get Hammersmith & Fulham recognition

Community heroes get Hammersmith & Fulham recognitionUnsung heroes residing in the London borough of Hammersmith and Fulham yesterday (May 15th) received their deserved recognition at a special celebration last night to honour special contributions to the community.

Residents gathered for the event last night at the culmination of an event that saw almost 50 people nominated in total.

The Hammersmith and Fulham Hero Awards were launched in February this year in an effort to create a community spirit and recognise the hard work carried out by various hardworking individuals in the district.

People were asked to nominate their heroes under five categories, with the Fulham and Hammersmith Chronicle focusing on a different group of people every week in order to provide some background and keep interest in the campaign alive.

More than 80 people attended the event, including the Mayor of Hammersmith and Fulham councillor Belinda Donovan and various representatives from the local authority.

Guests were more than satisfied with a selection of light refreshments and music was provided by guitarist Geoff Robb.

Many people were lucky enough to receive awards, with Bill Cox taking the first honour of the evening for Charity Worker of the Year. Mr Cox's efforts to engage football-mad youngsters were particularly commended.

Street cleaner Piotr Mickiewicz was posthumously awarded a well-deserved recognition collected by his wife and family after he was stabbed while trying to stop a burglar fleeing the scene in Shepherds Bush.

Tara Thakkar of Latymer Upper School went away with the Young Achievers Award, garnering praise for her particularly strong contribution to the St John's Ambulance cadet movement and first aid work.

Also victorious in the entrepreneur category was Sheperds Bush model Kim Calera, who set up a successful jewellery business despite finding herself homeless on the streets of Mumbai, India.

Council Leader Nicholas Botterill commented: "While there can only be one winner in each category, it is fair to say that all of the nominees deserve recognition as these are the people who help to make Hammersmith & Fulham the best place to live and visit in London."
