Brent Council has rolled out a new recycling scheme
Around 20,000 additional households will be able to benefit from a successful recycling scheme taking place in Brent, it has been revealed.
Brent Council has introduced a new communal recycling scheme that will allow those living in flats to recycle food waste.
The local authority estimates that this will result in an additional 400,000kgs of food waste being recycled each year.
The scheme was rolled out earlier this month, and is part of the new public realm contract.
A pilot project involving 193 blocks of flats proved successful and saw households increase their food recycling from 0kg to around 1.2kg per household, per week.
Around £170,000 was allocated by the London Waste and Recycling Board to help with implementation of this communal food waste recycling initiative, after the bid from Brent Council was selected.
This new scheme will see households across the borough being provided with a five litre kitchen caddie for each household, in addition to an initial 6 month supply (two rolls) of caddy liners for each household.
Each block of flats will also include a communal recycling unit at each block of flats.
Under the scheme, households will also be provided with an information guide, explaining how to use the new service.
The recycling is a weekly project, with the council hoping that it will significantly boost the amount of waste being recycled every week.
This is one of many initiatives announced by Brent Council this month, which is helping to improve the lives of residents in the area.
Earlier this month, the council announced that free school meals will be given to all Brent school children in reception classes and years one and two.
This will be regardless of the economic status of their parents.
