Auntie waves goodbye to Hammersmith
The London borough of Hammersmith & Fulham is set to receive a multi-million pound regeneration with the departure of the BBC from the iconic Television Centre, located in the White City district of the area.
Affectionately named 'the Dream Factory', the question mark-shaped building has played host to some of the most loved series' to appear on British television, including Blue Peter, Dad's Army, Fawlty Towers, Doctor Who and Strictly Come Dancing.
In addition to a plethora of popular programmes, the site has also housed more than its fair share of well-known celebrities, among them Sir Terry Wogan, Sir David Jason and Sir Michael Parkinson.
The BBC sold the 14-acre site for a grand total of £200 million last year after announcing it will move the bulk of its operations to Salford, which has led to a number of proposals to renovate the area and construct flats, offices, a hotel and a cinema in the location.
However, the publicly-funded broadcaster will not be leaving the site entirely, with plans for the company to rent three of the main studios from 2014, although they will be expected to share with other production companies.
Should planning permission be granted by the council, residents of Hammersmith and Fulham will be able to access the iconic forecourt.
Those interested in how the development will look in the future can access a master plan at the website of Television Centre.
Cllr Greg Smith, Hammersmith and Fulham council deputy leader, commented: “No other area can claim to have been the home to an Olympics as well as some of the nation’s most memorable programmes.
"Whatever replaces Television Centre needs to create new homes and jobs in one of our most deprived neighbourhoods," he added.
The building closed its doors for good this weekend on Easter Sunday (March 31st), following a Goodbye Television Centre concert led by pop group Madness.
Frontman Suggs told the crowds: "Goodbye Television Centre. I'm going to miss you."
