Westminster to open dementia centre
Residents of the London borough of Westminster can be reassured that they will be looked after in their old age should they develop dementia, with the opening of a state-of-the-art facility specifically designed to assist those with the illness.
The centre opened to great fanfare earlier today (March 15th) in a ceremony attended by Baroness Greengross, vice-chair of the All Party Parliamentary Group on Dementia & Ageing, as well as Westminster Council’s cabinet member for adult social care Rachael Robathan.
Residents will be able to take advantage of a solid combination of social care and healthcare services and will be the first of its kind to utilise web chat technology in order to help patients manage their condition.
Activities on offer to sufferers include arts and culture, music, cooking and a specially-designed hydrotherapy pool.
The centre received a complete redesign in order to cater for people with dementia, with a specialist unit from the University of Stirling offering crucial advice such as changing the lighting and decoration and upgrading the hydrotherapy pool facilities.
Residents have already spoken about the benefits they have received. Mrs Anne Moses, the full time carer of her husband Wilmoth, said she has time to sing in the choir and go to art classes now that he attends the centre three times a week.
Baroness Sally Greengross commented: “This fantastic new facility will support people with dementia to help them manage their own care for as long as possible, bringing vital services to the people of Westminster.”
“The services provided, including health and social care and working together with GPs will ensure people know where to go for help and support, ensuring the best possible care for people with dementia and their carers," she added.
The £300,000 facility is a particularly welcome addition to the community as the number of people within the UK with dementia is expected to hit 1.2 million by 2031.
