Westminster homes to benefit from big energy switch
Households in the London borough of Westminster will save a collective £80,000 a year through a new collective energy switching scheme, implemented by the council earlier this year in order to help residents deal with spiralling utility bills.
The initiative, which is taking place Nationwide, works by pitting rival energy providers against each other in order to locate the company that will provide the best deal for a certain community.
Nearly 700 homes in Westminster applied to take part when the scheme was announced in April, and with the sign-up not due to close until June 3rd, the local authority could yet see a last-minute rush of applicants.
Savings for the average household look to be at around £114 per year, with some residents set to save as much as £210 per year depending on their current supplier.
As if reduced spend on electricity and gas isn't enough of a reason to sign up, residents are also being urged to participate as £10 is donated for community projects in Westminster for every address that signs up.
“The savings from the first phase of the energy switch speak for themselves and now Westminster residents who missed out can get a second chance to take part in the scheme and save money," commented councillor Jonathan Glanz, Westminster City Council cabinet member for housing and property.
“This is just another way that the council is seeking to help its residents deal with cost of living pressures. It is free to register and there is no commitment to switch.
“With living costs rising every year this is a great opportunity to save some money and help community projects in your area at the same time - it is a win-win for everyone.”
Residents looking to find out more information about the scheme are being urged to look at the website.
