Westminster district to get £70m overhaul
Westbourne Green in Westminster is to benefit from a massive regeneration scheme.
The project will result in 300 homes being constructed thanks to a £70 million investment. Once the development has been completed, property to rent in Westminster should be easier to come by.
Currently, the area is one of the most deprived in London, according to 24dash. Over 50 per cent of children in the location come from unemployed families and it is hoped the initiative will drastically improve the fortunes of its inhabitants.
Councillor Jonathan Glanz, cabinet member for housing and corporate property at Westminster Council, stated: "The regeneration of Westbourne Green is not just about housing, but everything from providing more jobs and education opportunities for local people to boosting business in the area.
"Over the past year, the feedback that we have received from residents has formed the basis of these new proposals. With the help of local residents, we can make the community a better place to live."
The proposals lay out plans for a mix of social, intermediate and market homes. Plans are also in place to develop a new community centre and nursery facility, while improvements have also been targeted for Westbourne Green Park and the Harrow Road area.
Consultations on the plan have been carried out for the past year to ensure everyone was given an opportunity to voice their opinion on the matter.
It comes after figures were released showing that the number of young people not in employment, education or training in West London is lower than in most areas. The three boroughs of Kensington and Chelsea, Westminster and Hammersmith & Fulham recorded a figure of 5.4 per cent, which is below the 6.1 per cent national average.
Councillor Nickie Aiken, cabinet member for children, young people and community protection at Westminster Council, noted it is the local authority's job to provide all of the training and experience they can to help individuals.
