Southwark Council to build £400,000 cycle hub
A new £400,000 cycle hub is to be created beside Peckham Rye Station in the London borough of Southwark.
It means those seeking flats to rent in Peckham who like to commute on two wheels will have a location where they can securely park their bike. Under the plans, a workshop, CCTV monitors and a cycle shop will all be constructed.
Councillor Barrie Hargrove, cabinet member for transport, environment and recycling, observed the initiative is further proof of the area's commitment to helping cyclists. He added the scheme will appeal to those "who use bikes to commute through the borough and those who would like to 'bike it' but don't yet".
"This centre will provide secure indoor parking, keeping bikes safe from the weather as well as would-be thieves. It will also include a repair workshop and bike shop, providing a full service to cyclists in and around the area," Mr Hargrove stated.
It is part of a commitment by Southwark Council to become one of the "bike-friendliest" areas in London within the next five years, the Labour Party member remarked. Work on the project is expected to start in the next nine months and is due to finish by April 2013.
Southwark Council, the Department of Transport and Transport for London have all contributed funding to the project, while the management of the site will fall to Southern Railways once it is completed.
However, cyclists are not the only road users who are being looked after, as the local authority is also increasing the number of bays in the borough under its car club scheme.
An additional 13 spots will be created, which takes the total to 118, as the project seeks to cut down on congestion and pollution. Mr Hargrove stated there are plans for a further 35 bays to be added next year.
