Pimlico: A posh yet affordable area of West London
Pimlico is an upmarket and sophisticated area of West London, with a relaxed and contemporary feel to it.
Located in the borough of Westminster, Pimlico is known for its impressive architecture, and grand garden squares.
It is worlds apart from the usual hustle and bustle of Central London, partly because of its beautiful landscapes and green spaces.
The area has all of the luxury of Chelsea and Kensington, but is slightly more affordable than those areas.
This means that Londoners who choose to settle there get much more value for their money and still get to reside in an upmarket and sophisticated area.
Pimlico is an often underrated and overlooked Central London neighbourhood, which presents a casual and laid-back alternative to some of the inner-city locations.
Transport
Pimlico has excellent transport links to the rest of London and is served by a local underground station on the Victoria line and Victoria Station, which is also on the District and Circle lines.
The area is also served by National Rail services to London Victoria Station. Buses in Pimlico run on a regular basis, while the routes that run through the heart of Central London are the 24, 360 and C10.
If you don't quite fancy jumping on the bus or getting on the train, then there are other options for travellers as well.
For those that really want to experience the sights and sounds of London, it's possible to take riverboat services to Waterloo and Southwark, which run from Millbank Millennium Pier.
Another travel option is the number of docking stations for the Barclays Cycle Hire scheme.
However, there are new proposals to connect Pimlico at Victoria to the proposed Chelsea-Hackney line.
Additionally, there are plans to redevelop Nine Elms and Battersea Power Station include a pedestrian bridge stretching across the river from St. George's Square.
Properties
The streets of Pimlico are lined with white, columned townhouses houses. In this area you will find ancient churches, private homes, beautiful taverns and pristine gardens.
Properties are a mix of terraced homes, luxury flats and Victorian homes. Houses start from around £250,000 in this part of London, and the cheapest flatshare is around £80 a week.
It is not known to be one of the most affordable places to live in London, but it is a lovely, quiet neighbourhood, with farmers markets, pubs and restaurants, and major attractions nearby.
Arts and Entertainment
Pimlico is one of the more sedate areas of London. It is just a stone's throw from well-known tourist attractions such as Buckingham Palace and Green Park, or the banks of the Thames.
It also has its fair share of arts and crafts shops, and galleries.
Notable residents
Some of the most famous residents to have lived in the area include Sir Winston Churchill, who lived in Eccleston Square.
Swami Vivekananda, the hindu philosopher also briefly lived in the area, as did the Joseph Conrad, the Polish-born British novelist.
It has also been home to numerous artists, footballers and musicians.
Westminster
Westminster is the borough that Pimlico is based in. It is one of the most glamorous areas of West London and home to the famed Westminster Cathedrals.
Other historic landmarks include the Palace of Westminster, Buckingham Palace and Westminster Abbey.
It also has a substantial residential population and contains a number of listed buildings in the area. There is also a significant working class community living in the Peabody Trust estates area of London.
