Historic London views to be preserved
Panoramic views of London that have been enjoyed for centuries by England's ruling monarchs are to be preserved, according to the Evening Standard.
Conservation groups - backed by Westminster Council and royal representatives - had been up in arms about proposals to construct a pair of 380 ft towers just 50 yards from Buckingham Palace.
The skyscrapers would have been clearly visible from the royal residence and may even have cast a shadow over Her Majesty's garden.
They were proposed by Land Securities and Transport for London as part of a regeneration of the Victoria area, but have now been rejected following a salvo of complaints about their effect on historic views across the capital.
"Hugely important events which have involved millions have been set in this landscape, including the Queen's coronation and her Silver Jubilee," English Heritage spokesman Steven Bee told the Evening Standard. "This is what is at stake."
The developers are now said to be drawing up plans for more modestly-sized towers which would reportedly stand no taller than 240 ft.
