Work due to begin on £3m Tolworth regeneration scheme
A major regeneration scheme to improve a Tolworth high street for shoppers and cyclists will get underway next week, Kingston Council has announced.
The £3 million 'greenway' scheme includes the removal of the central reservation barrier along the Broadway and the creation of step-free crossings and new loading bays for shops on either side of the road.
According to Kingston Council, the new crossings will improve access to shops, schools, green spaces, recreation facilities and Tolworth Station, making life easier for traders, residents and anyone who uses the local area.
There will also be improvements in lighting and paving, modified subways, new trees and benches and the introduction of a 20mph speed limit along the Broadway.
Councillor Simon James, Kingston Council's lead member for Transport, said that when the work is finished people will see a totally transformed Tolworth.
"The new central 'greenway' will be an outstanding space for pedestrians and cyclists to enjoy and all the changes will make the Broadway a thriving place that people want to spend time in," he added.
"The improvements will be good for the environment too, encouraging more shoppers and commuters to cycle, reducing car journeys and lowering emissions."
Work is currently due to begin on March 18th, but contractors will start preparing the site from March 11th. Kingston Council, which is funding the work in partnership with Transport for London, has said that building and construction is to be phased over six months to minimise disruption as much as possible.
It is hoped that when the work is finished, Tolworth will be a more attractive and convenient place for people to live in and visit.
"Tolworth Broadway will look and feel very different and at last people will be able to enjoy an attractive centre that they deserve," said Councillor Rachel Reid, South of the Borough Neighbourhood Committee chair. "This major investment will give the whole area a lift."
