Why Abbey Wood is transforming into a sought-after location
Abbey Wood is a small district located within South-East London, within the boroughs of Greenwich and Bexley.
It is an area that has been subject to a lot of regeneration over the years, and is often hailed as being a little bit of a hotspot.
Certainly, it seems to have a lot going for it. It is one of the main locations in the capital that has benefited hugely from the Crossrail, and all of the investment and travel advantages that will eventually bring.
Once the Crossrail is completed, Abbey Wood will be just three stops from the Isle of Dogs, with access to the Jubilee Line and Docklands Light Railway.
Although house prices are set to rise as a result, it has also seen the development of new houses and amenities, which will undoubtedly bring more jobs and investment into the area.
The locality also has a number of parks and green spaces, including Abbey Wood and Bostall Gardens, which also contain sports facilities such as basketball and tennis courts.
It is also home to Lesnes Abbey Woods, a local nature reserve, part of which was designated as a site of special natural interest.
Although new developments are expected to transform the area into a major destination in its own right, it also has the added benefit of being close to other retail hotspots in Charing Cross and Thamesmead, which are both just a short train ride away.
Over the last few years, over £85 million has been invested into regenerating the area. This is set to include the building of over 400 homes, a hotel, a supermarket and other amenities.
Hundreds of jobs will also be created in the area as a result, and changes to pedestrian routes will also take place.
Local authorities estimate that the project would generate £125 million for the area over the next ten years or so.
