Tower Hamlets to host Olympic celebrations at London Live
People occupying flats to rent in Tower Hamlets next summer will be able to enjoy the excitement of the Olympic Games as part of an open-air event called London Live.
The historic Victoria Park has been chosen as one of three venues for the 17-day event, which is also taking place in Hyde Park and Trafalgar Square and will provide attendees with a cost-free way to keep up with the Games.
Between July 27th and August 12th 2012, two giant screens will be erected in the park to showcase the best of the action from the international sporting extravaganza, while residents will also be given a chance to get hold of one of 4,000 Olympic tickets on each day of the event.
There will also be a wide array of other attractions available, such as the London Live Sports Park, which will give aspiring athletes the chance to take part in many of the Olympic and Paralympic events they have been watching.
Other entertainment will include a 40ft observation wheel, a double zipline, water zorbing and live music performances.
Mayor Lutfur Rahman said: "I want the people of Tower Hamlets to have the chance to experience the Olympic Games. The eyes of the world will be on East London and I want to make the best of it for Tower Hamlets."
The London Olympics are expected to benefit the local area in a number of ways, with businesses in Tower Hamlets set to see a major upturn in demand next year.
As such, more than £8 million has been secured by Tower Hamlets Council to make improvements to the high street, as part of the city-wide High Street 2012 project.
It will involve the restoration of historic buildings and improvements to local infrastructure, including new pedestrian links and crossings.
