Tower Hamlets Council to create conservation area
A new conservation area near the Olympic Park is to be created by Tower Hamlets Council.
It will sit north of Fish Island at White Post Lane and will consist of a cluster of buildings and waterways that have a special historic and architectural interest to the area. Residents are being asked to provide their views on what the location should consist of.
Anyone looking for flats to rent in Tower Hamlets could be encouraged to check out what the site has to offer.
It includes the River Lea and the Hertford Union Canal and was transformed from marsh land in the 18th century to a bustling industrial area in the early part of the 20th century.
Now the local authority is keen to designate White Post Lane as a conservation area. This would mean rules are put in place protecting trees and unlisted buildings, while controls would also be tightened on development and demolition.
Residents of the borough have until July 30th to offer their opinions on the matter and then the council's cabinet will meet to discuss the matter in detail in autumn.
It is not the only project planned for the Tower Hamlets area at the moment. A £250 million estate renewal - which will be located just two miles away from the Olympic Stadium - has been given the green light.
Willmott Dixon's development division Regen will carry out the joint venture with Poplar Housing and Regeneration Community Association (HARCA). The project, which is going to be developed over six phases, will eventually see 1,176 homes, shops and healthcare and community facilities created.
Regen chief executive officer Andrew Telfer stated: "[Groups] like Poplar HARCA want to utilise our development know-how to make their vision for a new era of housing for hundreds of families a reality. Along with that, the imminent Olympics and the fantastic infrastructure around the Games have really focused attention on the great housing opportunities in Poplar."
