Shout Out UK gets Harrow attention
A campaign that aims to reinvigorate British interest in politics by having the subject taught as part of the standard national curriculum has received the support of the London borough of Harrow, with council leader Thaya Idaikkadar among those advocating the change.
Student newspaper Shout Out UK is currently pushing for a political course that would explore the inner workings and functions of government to all students, with hopes that the lessons could be put into practice as early as next year.
The attempt to raise awareness has seen letters signed by councillor Idaikkadar land on the doormats of schools across Harrow in order to garner support. Shout Out UK founder Matteo Bergamini initially received the council leader's support for the campaign in January.
Among other things, the course proposed by the publication will aim to give students a greater awareness of how democracy is different in other countries, how new laws are passed and how young people can get more directly involved with UK politics.
"I am happy to give my ongoing support to this campaign," said councillor Idaikkadar. "It is important that our young people are well informed so that they can make important choices and understand why decisions are made at both a national and local level."
Mr Bergami emphasised the importance of Harrow's support, arguing that "the students of today will become the leaders of tomorrow but this will be impossible if they have no idea how our democracy works.
"Young people today need education in politics, it's in every aspect of society."
The letters sent out as part of the campaign urge school leaders to pledge their support and request they attend an official launch event, to be held April 20th in the council chambers at the Civic Centre.
Harrow Council states it is committed to providing support for organisations and events that encourage youth involvement with politics, including the Harrow Youth Parliament, which represents the views of young people throughout the borough.
