Rural England 'needs more affordable housing'
More needs to be done to ensure that affordable housing is available in rural England, one sector commentator has claimed.
Martin Collett, operations director at English Rural Housing Association, said most villages in the country could benefit from an increase in the available affordable housing as this could help to sustain local services.
"For [people with] lower incomes - and given the limited development in villages and their popularity with people moving to them - obviously house prices have been pushed beyond the reach of many local people," she asserted.
Ms Collett recommended providing small developments of six to ten homes to meet the needs of local people.
People currently looking for property to rent in Blackheath or another part of London as they cannot afford to buy in the capital may also wish to see more affordable housing in the city.
The annual Halifax Rural Housing Review recently revealed that rural house prices have risen by 118 per cent (£110,132) in the past decade, compared to a 111 per cent increase in urban areas.
