Poplar's Chrisp Street to get £100m regeneration
Some £100 million is to be spent regenerating the Chrisp Street area of Poplar in Tower Hamlets.
Poplar Housing and Regeneration Community Association (HARCA) has chosen United House and Allied London as the preferred developer in a joint project. Chrisp Street Market, which is a purpose-built market square and was created for the Festival of Britain in 1951, will be central to the plan to make over the space.
A new food and shopping destination is to be created and so flats to rent in Poplar may become much sought after once the work has been completed.
Jeffrey Adams, group chief executive of United House, noted it means East London can look forward to creating a new "community focus" for residents. "United House has an outstanding track record of working with local communities to deliver award-winning regeneration programmes and we look forward to creating a new sense of place in Poplar," he added.
Michael Ingall, chief executive at Allied London, observed a "new urban village" will be created by the project. He went on to note the regeneration scheme will play an important part in breathing new life into the East End.
Chief executive of Poplar HARCA Steve Stride admitted he is glad to see the new version of Chrisp Street coming closer. "We are all very excited at the potential of this project and for the benefits that it will bring to our residents and shopkeepers," he remarked.
Such is the extent of the work to be carried out that it is not expected to be finished until 2017. New space is planned for a variety of reasons, including leisure, health and fitness, cultural, commercial and retail. As well as this, a new community area will be constructed around the Market Square.
