Newham: 650-home development set to breathe new life into the borough
Newham Council has recently submitted plans for a 650-home development in the borough, it has been announced.
The Rathbone Market development in Canning Town is being delivered by the English Cities Fund (ECf), in partnership with the council.
This initiative is in its final stages and is part of the council’s £3.7 billion Canning Town and Custom House regeneration programme.
Phase three of the plans will include 162 privately owned properties and 54 affordable houses. The homes will be predominantly a mix of one, two and three-bed properties within three blocks.
The buildings will range in height from six to 14 storeys and will be constructed around a communal garden.
Commenting on the scheme, Duncan Cumberland, development director for ECf, said that the final stages of the housing initiative will help to complete what he described as an "exciting and innovative" development.
He added that it will help to breathe new life into a part of London that was once neglected.
"ECf are very excited about this submission which represents the final piece in the jigsaw for Rathbone Market.
"The design team have worked closely with London borough of Newham planning department and have responded positively to comments from the design review panel. This submission continues the exemplar design of Phases 1 and 2," he said.
Newham Council added that all of the tower blocks in the development will include ground floor properties and many will be built in the style of town houses.
Homes will comprise of a balcony, double-height ceilings and rear amenity space onto the courtyard garden.
However, the building of new properties is not the only positive announcement to emerge from Newham Council recently.
Figures published recently by the local authority revealed that the borough has the highest percentage of first place offers for primary school pupils.
According to the statistics, 90.76 per cent of pupils got their first choice primary school. This is ten percentage points above the London average of 80.74 per cent.
