New housing development could bring jobs to Peckham area
Southwark Council have approved plans for a new housing development. The Notting Hill Housing Association development will see the building of over 100 affordable homes in Peckham; helping to rejuvenate the area.
The houses are set to be built on vacant land that is close to the town centre. Alongside the three residential blocks that are to be constructed, the development will also see the construction of retail space. Not only will the development bring construction jobs to the area, the retail buildings will also provide permanent jobs within the community.
In total around 333 new homes are to be built on the former site of the Wooddene buildings, which were demolished in 2007. Of those, 35 per cent are set to be affordable housing - equating to 117 homes.
The plans also include several areas of open and green space for community use, including a pocket park and communal garden areas. Some of the properties will also be provided with private garden space. The outside areas of the development will be landscaped and have trees planted to beautify the local area.
Councillor Fiona Colley, cabinet member for Regeneration, said: "When there is such demand for housing in Southwark, it's a terrible shame that a prominent site like Wooddene has sat empty for such a long time. I'm really pleased that we've found a developer who has ambitious plans for the area, and is also committed to providing the affordable housing that many of our residents really need.
"In addition to the 1,000 new council homes we have committed to build in the next 7 years, the homes in this new development will help us make a dent in our 20,000 long waiting list for affordable housing. It will also contribute to our ongoing plans to transform Peckham into an even better place to live."
The existing energy centre that was used to provide power to the previous housing estate will be demolished to make way for a new combined heat and power energy centre, which will help in meeting the energy demands of the new properties.
The development needs to receive approval from the Mayor of London before building work can begin.
