New development on Albert Embankment given the go-ahead
Albert Embankment is already home to some rather impressive buildings, from the Secret Intelligence Service headquarters to the large riverside apartment blocks beside Vauxhall Bridge.
But soon there could be another one to add to the list, as Lambeth Council has just given the go-ahead for a new development at the old Eastbury House site.
Under plans drawn up by St James Group, the 11-storey tower block would be demolished and a new 28-storey building, designed by Roger Stirk and Partners, erected in its place.
It would be a mixed use development providing space for 48 new homes, as well as offices, retail outlets, restaurants and a public piazza.
The Design Council, which merged with the Commission for Architecture and the Built Environment last year, said it supports the proposals, which it believes will help to generate a more "variegated skyline" along the embankment.
"The scheme has the makings of a successful urban tower," said the group. "Its diagram, proportions, expression and the way it engages with the street show welcome consideration for its local and city-wide context."
The plans are part of a wide regeneration project within the Vauxhall Nine Elms area, which is expected to benefit many of those seeking flats to rent in Lambeth, Vauxhall and Battersea.
Altogether some 16,000 new homes are being created along the riverside from Battersea Power Station to Lambeth Bridge, around 3,500 of which will arrive in the next ten years.
"We will continue to work with developers to make sure we get good quality, well designed schemes that contribute towards our vision to recreate a lively riverside town centre," said Steve Reed, leader of Lambeth Council.
A draft supplementary planning document for the Vauxhall and Albert Embankment area is expected to be published for consultation in October this year.
It will set out Lambeth Council's vision for the area in the years ahead, giving developers a clear picture of what is needed.
