Lambeth ponders Northern line extension
The London borough of Lambeth has announced it will soon make a final decision on whether to approve an ambitious Transport for London (TFL) project that could see the district take in an additional £46 million worth of income in revenue.
Following public consultations in 2010 and 2011, it was proposed that the Northern Line of the Tube could be extended towards Battersea, providing Lambeth with a new station at Nine Elms.
However, residents were concerned that the extension would affect their quality of living and asked for additional design work and analysis to accurately gauge the location of the shafts.
As part of a TFL consultation, residents were given the opportunity to air their views, with the majority (61 per cent) claiming the best route would be an extension to the Charing Cross branch of the Northern Line, to extend through Nine Elms to Battersea.
The survey noted extremely high levels of support for the project, with 87 per cent agreeing it has the potential to benefit the area.
Research identified a number of key areas where shafts would have to be located on a permanent basis, including Kennington Green, Kennington Park and Cottingham Road. Lambeth Councillors are expected to discuss the impact of such radical additions at a meeting on March 4th.
Lib Peck, councillor for Lambeth, said: "The Northern Line extension is an exciting development and we are pleased to be supporting it.
"This is vital part of our plan to create thousands of new jobs and homes in Vauxhall, giving the local community a town centre with a proper high street and making the desperately needed safety improvements for pedestrians and cyclists around the gyratory," she added.
Other improvements to Vauxhall as part of the scheme will include the creation of 3,500 new homes and 8,000 new jobs, 50 acres of new public spaces including parkland and the construction of a new primary school, health and community facilities.
